My author brand is “Joyful books, for readers both young and old.”

I really am a lover of books. My nose was always in a book, when I was younger. I still love to read, when I get the chance, and I also love to write. I love getting lost in the creative process of writing.

I am lead author on two co-authored and published textbooks. Early Childhood Education is published by SAGE. Careers in Child and Adolescent Development is published by Taylor and Francis. I am also the second co‐editor of a third textbook, Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum and Instruction. It is also published by Taylor and Francis. My fourth co-authored textbook is Social Emotional Development in Children through Emerging Adults, published by Taylor and Francis.

I have three indie published picture books, which were published by a small indie publisher that is now out of business. I am so happy that my next picture book is releasing in Spring of 2026 by Magination Press/American Psychological Association. The title of this picture book is As you are: A Hope for Black Sons.

I attended the University of Redlands as an undergrad and obtained a Double BA in Psychology and Music. The University of Redlands gave me an Alumni Career Award in 2019. I attended Stanford University GSE in graduate school. I obtained an EdS in Program Evaluation and a PhD in Child and Adolescent Development. Stanford University GSE gave me an Alumni Excellence in Education Award in 2018.

Where are you from? A small rural town in Southern Illinois with 250 people.

Tell us about your new book. 

Every Black mother wishes the world could see her son as she sees him. All too soon, it seems to forget the innocent child she has known and loved since before his birth.

To prepare him as he’s about to take on the world, a mother shares her heartfelt wisdom that she hopes her child carries with him always―to embrace the world when it is kind, to know that he is worthy when the world is not, and to remember that her love will never waver.

Accompanied by rich illustrations, this is a moving and insightful guide to growing up as a Black boy. Included is a note from the author, who has a background in psychology, that discusses starting all-too-necessary conversations.

Where do you get your inspiration for this story? Raising my son. I saw the micro-aggressions he endured. I want to protect him forever, but I can’t. So, I have to prepare him for some not-so-nice events that he will encounter. I have to love him forever and unconditionally.

What do you hope readers take away from your book? Since the book is published by Magination/American Psychological Association, the note to readers shows parents how to talk to their child, especially Black Sons, about micro-aggressions and other biases.

How long did you to write and publish this book? The whole process took about 2.5 years from conceiving the idea until now. It will publish in Spring of 2026. 

Did the story change a lot from your first draft to the final version? Yes, it did. It started with a repeating refrain. That is now gone. My agent, Deborah Warren, made some changes. Then my editor, Kristin Zalasko, also made changes. 

What has your publishing experience been like? It has been delightful. Deborah and Kristin are both wonderful. David Wilkerson’s illustrations are just gorgeous.

How do you connect with your readers? I do readings. With my knowledge of Child and Adolescent Development (Developmental Science), I understand children very well. A smile, a warm heart, and authenticity go a long way.

What’s the most rewarding part of being an author so far? Seeing my ideas in print. Interacting with my audience. Those two are a tie for most rewarding.
